Recent North Texas Food Bank donations by employees of Wol-Med CARF Pain Management Clinic helped raise money to feed the needy. During an online food drive for the food bank in November and December, 50 employees made donations. The online aspect of the drive allows more donated money to be used for meals and less for administrative costs for the food bank.

“It lowers the [food bank's] operating costs,” said Chris Helms, company director of operations. “And it tells you how many meals you provide. It’s amazing. You never know how much food you can donate with just $100.”

Anyone can donate to the food bank at the company’s Web site atwww.wolmed.com .

“And we encourage it, actually,” Helms said. “We try to promote that. At first it was going to be a holiday thing, but we decided it was important to keep it there.”

There are several forms of heart disease, but heart disease primarily comes from the buildup of fatty deposits on the inner surface of arteries. Eventually these deposits block blood flow, leading to heart attack or stroke.

How Free Radicals cause and/or contribute to heart disease?

Scientists now believe that it’s not just the eating of fat that cause the buildup on the inner surface of the arteries, but those fats that have been damaged by free radicals. This is called “oxidized fat”, which causes the fat to be more “sticky” therefore adhering to the inner artery walls more easily. This explains why smoking and stress are risk factors to heart disease – as are high fat consumption.

“Don’t underestimate the threat free radicals pose to our health. Scientists now believe that free radicals are causal factor in nearly every known disease, from heart disease to arthritis, cancer, and cataracts.

In fact, free radicals are a major culprit in the aging process itself. By controlling free radicals, antioxidants can make the difference between life and death, as well as influence how fast and how well we age.”

WOL+MED Medical Doctors and staff are experts in diagnosing, documenting, and treating work injuries. Our staff receives training each year to remain current in all of the new rules and laws affecting injured workers and we are CARF accredited for Work Conditioning, Work Hardening, and Chronic Pain Management. CARF is the “gold standard” in rehabilitation and workers compensation in Texas.

We treat over 500 new injured workers each year. We have helped people with everything from cut fingers to severe back injuries. We know how to get your injury claim approved by the insurance carrier and most importantly, we know how to help you get better.

Facts on Chronic Pain

Approximately 80 million people in the United States suffer Chronic pain.

Chronic low back pain affects nearly 31 million Americans and represents the most common cause of disability in persons less than 45 years of age.

The American Pain Foundation describes pain as the fifth vital sign after blood pressure, pulse, respiration and temperature.

Research indicates that men and women respond differently to pain. Women are believed to seek help more quickly, are more likely to use a variety of support resources to deal with pain and recover more quickly.

Pain is the number one complaint of older Americans, and one in five older Americans regularly use painkillers, according to the American Pain Foundation.

The first step in treating chronic pain is seeking medical care to diagnose the cause.

Many doctors have had little training in pain care and may be unaware or not fully informed of treatments that can help to relieve pain, other than pain medicine.

The cause of chronic pain is not always evident.

In a survey by the National Institutes of Health, lower back pain was Americans’ leading pain complaint.

Repetitive stress injuries, such as tennis elbow, are musculoskeletal conditions that result from repeated motions performed during work or other activities.

Exercise is often prescribed as a way to treat and prevent pain.

Nearly half of patients who complain of pain to their doctors are depressed.

On average, 65% of depressed people also complain of pain.

People whose pain limits their independence are especially likely to get depressed.

If you or a loved one has been hurt at work, please let WOL+MED help you. Call (940)600-1514 for an appointment today.
